Correspondence about my art journey - where I've been, where I am, and where I am going.

FACES, RACES, LINES

I like working with continuous line, broken line, contour line, and outline.  I had fun creating these weird characters on shiny striped paper - I used Bic, Sharpies and Sakura pens, and also some Sharpie Paint pens.

ALTERED?

This was an exercise in playing with the markers on Yupo paper - this sheet of Yupo was an advertisement for Yupo paper - I kept adding layers of marker, and altering what was underneath.  The colours were absolutely beautiful.  And yes, there was some sort of bird-like creature there in the advertisement, i just don't remember what it looked like before I had my way with it.

"DOODLE ART" IN COLOUR

I love doodling - and this is a fine example of doodling in colour = working with Sakura pens - there are different kinds of pens, and I have used quite a variety here.

CREATING ANOTHER PAINTING?

Okay - took the idea of the markers a little further this time, and created a somewhat abstract idea.

FRONTS AND BACKS

These pieces were a lot of fun - working with markers on absorbent paper - it blends through to the back.  I then started to add coloured pencil to fill in the designs.  Still have lots of work to do to these, but thought I would share where I am at right now.

DESIGNING IN BLACK AND WHITE - AND ADDING IN COLOUR

This black and white image was created using Sharpies.  I then copied it numerous times and started working on each new image with Sakura pens - the image on the right is reversed from the elft one, but it is the same image I started with.

CALLIGRAPHY??? My OWN EXEMPLARS

A couple of exemplars from an absolute beginner.  For years I have been admiring the work of Calligraphic Artists and Book Artists and their use of lettering, so I though I would try some of my own.

Adding back into the Simplification

Here I have taken the simplified images and created my own story by adding  in my own ideas and design elements.

EXPLORING SIMPLIFICATION

Using black Sharpie Markers, I tore images from Magazines, and worked on telling a story by simplifying the images, taking out everything that was no longer necessary.
The images that remained either told a similar story, or one very different, depending on my approach.

USING MARKERS TO PLAN NEW ABSTRACT PAINTINGS

Yes, I have now started to take my mere scribbles and explorations and work them into abstract painting ideas.  Here are 2 examples of ideas I really liked.  Maybe they will show up at my next show???????

PLAYING WITH MARKERS

It's like being a little girl again, taking out the coloured markers, and just layering them over each other, watching the interactions of mark and colour.  Having spent many years working in watercolour, this experience was pure joy, as the markers stay liquid for a while on this slick surface paper - long enough to bump into each other and join forces.

COLLAGE - JOURNAL PAGES

/I bought a very large journal kit a year or so ago from a store called Ruby Dog's in Vancouver.  In the kit were hundred of papers, pictures, ephemera, ribbon etc., and punched pages for creating a journal, or in this case many journals.  This is one page I created using some of my favourite elements - repetition of shape.  I also emphasized complimentary colours by staying in the blue/orange families.  I am happy with the result, and will add it to my box of completed pages.

EXPLORING LINE

I have been exploring line and colour using different kinds of markers and slick papers.  I was using repetition as an element of design,  and using sakura gel pen, I would hold a number of pens in my hand at the same time, and draw lines and patterns that are repeated by each pen.
Sometimes I would just play with the lines and emphasize some more than others.  An energy would often emerge that has a rhythm and balance.
I could also use a colour dominance and really focus on the lines, and shapes.

WORKING WITH MARKERS ON A SLICK SURFACE

These four pieces were created on shiny surface paper, similar to yupo paper.  They are done with Sharpies and Bic Markers, sometimes blending colours together a bit.  It was great fun looking at all the relationships between the colours.

Playing Cards #5

A small set of round playing cards.  This was part of a deck of cards.  I was
playing with very liquid paint, dropping it onto the card, and then watching
it react with droplets of alcohol.  Each card developed it's own personality , yet
they all stayed loyal to the family DNA.  I wish I had completed the whole deck
at the same time, as this set has taken on a biological feel.
